Russian heavyweight boxer Magomed Abdusalamov remains in a medically induced coma in a New York City hospital following emergency surgery to remove a blood clot on his brain sustained during Saturday’s bout against Mike Perez.

The 32 year-old boxer lost to Perez in 10 rounds and also broke his nose and left hand during the fight.

According to the New York Daily News, Abdusalamov’s condition was elevated to “critical” by Roosevelt Hospital staff on Monday. However, Abdusalamov’s promoter, Nathan Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing, noted that the boxer is in stable condition and that he was initially brought into the hospital as a precaution.

“He thought he broke his left hand in the second round and also thought he had broken his nose at some point in the fight,” Lewkowicz told ESPN. “But the bigger concern once he was at the hospital was the head injury they discovered.”

HBO, who televised the fight, released a statement by HBO Sports president Ken Hershman in support of Abdusalamov.

“The thoughts and prayers of all of us at HBO Sports are with Magomed Abdusalamov,” the statement read. “We are grateful for the medical care he is receiving here in New York City and out of respect for Magomed and his family, we will wait for any official updates on his condition before making any further statements.”

Abdusalamov was 18-0 with 18 knockouts going into the fight.
